The First Date - Unfinished

The First Date

She almost panicked

When he intertwined his fingers in her hair and pulled

He kissed her hard

And she relaxed

Giving in to him

Even though it was their first date

His hands moved over her sweater

Her heart raced as his hand moved toward her breast

In the back of his mind,

He heard the digging,

Shovel penetrating earth,

Over and over.

Digging deeper and deeper.

She relaxed further into his arms

And was bewildered when he released his grasp

His hand slid out of the tangle of her hair

He sat up,

With both hands on the steering wheel,

Eyes forward,

He said, we have to go

Somewhat hurt

She sat up

Wondering what she did

David started the car

They drove back to the highway in silence

She never knew how close she came to being number 25

And David never knew

if he could love someone without eventually having to dig a hole
