Because Dougie Said No
(this isn’t a very good poem but I
just had to write it anyway)
Because Dougie Said No
Tonight he cried
Because Dougie said no
He called on the phone
To talk to his kids
Like nothing had happened
And last week didn’t exist
He had a knife to his chest
On more than one night
While his son was right there in the house
His tantrums won’t work
Not with me anyway
We drove through the night
And brought 3 out of harm’s way
The roads were all icy
Our blazer did slip
It didn’t detour us
From making the trip
On the bathroom floor
This manly man did lay
Saying “I want my knife”
Trying to get his way.
So to him I must say
Not on my watch
In your face little man
You’re not talking to them
Because Dougie said no.
So cry if you must
And call the police
Because they know the deal
They care about the children as much as I do.
As you fade off to sleep in your mommy and Daddy’s house tonight
Living like a carefree teenager
Remember this
As long as you throw your tantrums
In place of standing up and facing life
You’ll never be anything more than a joke.
