The Gods of Children
The Gods of Children
(A work in Progress)
We are the Gods of children
We kiss away their pain
A child hides
As mommy cries
And daddy’s gone away
Faces change
And so do drugs
But the story’s still the same
Did mommy use a needle
Or candy for her nose?
Did she crawl in to the bottle
While you wore wrinkled clothes
Did she sit in the corner rocking
When there were no drugs to be had?
Did the breaking glass Wake you at night
Or was it screams this time?
Did the kids at school ask you
Why your mommy’s eyes were black
Did you learn not to make new friends
Cause friendship never lasts
Was home only home for a little while
Then you’re the new kid once again
Did a knock at the door
Mean time to hide?
Did friends just disappear?
Will the Mickey Mouse Club
Always remind you of two armed men
mommies eyes so full of fear
As she lunged to get on top of you
In case the bullets flew
We had our turn as the little one
Now it’s time to be big
We are the Gods of children
We kiss away their pain
Have you made a difference in at least one life?
We are the Gods of children
We kiss away their pain
But we can be the monsters
That warp their little minds
Good intent means nothing
If you’re the Lord of Flies*
You can wish the best for the little ones
But still bring tears and pain
Remember this
As you go through life
Were the Gods of Children
We guide them on their path
We shape their minds
And guide their souls
We can give them hope
Or smash their dreams
Our actions shape their little lives
We are the Gods of Children
We kiss away their pain.
