I Killed My Friend Today

I Killed My Friend Today

With recent events we are cutting back

on the number of animals that we have

We are doing this to cut down on feed bills

And to fill our freezer

The first to go was my favorite rooster

He was a good friend

There is something inherently wrong

With killing and eating

Something that trusts you enough

To let you pick it up

Maybe that’s wrong

I think that I would rather eat chickens that were loved

Than chickens that have went through the horrible lives

of the mass production chicken farms

I felt bad at first

But I said my goodbye

We put him down and swung the axe

Just in case he had any conscious thought after it was over

I picked his head up and looked in to his eyes

I wanted his last seconds to be with a friend

Even if it was the friend that took his life

We are killing a Duck for tonight too

It breaks my heart to kill a duck

They are kind and gentle

And their little hearts beat a mile a minute when they are scared.

We have had two males for quite a while

Feeding the extra one was never an issue before

But we have made a financial choice that put us in a jam

And we have to cut back every way that we can

Killing the rest of the chickens won’t bother me

That’s what they are for

But today I killed my friend

And though the sadness won’t last long

It still lingers in the air

In a day or two

We are killing two of our goats

That will be a sad day

Stewie was one of our first goats

His eyes

As well as his actions are like a childs

When he looked up at me yesterday

It was like he saw in to me

I felt it in my heart

Death is part of life

And as I said before

I would rather eat something that felt love while it was alive

Than to eat something that was never loved.
