beyond the “America” concept

I think that I've moved beyond the “America” concept.

When were little

We are part of a family

We play the

“My dog is bigger than your dog” game

And the

“My dad can beat up your dad” game

When were a bit older

We consider ourselves

The (insert school mascot name here)

We have pride in our teams

Were the best, and all that Jazz

As we get older we find that

There is more to life

Than football or baseball

Some of us go on to college

We become the (insert school mascot name here)

And the pride flows once again

Soon we graduate

And that too fades

We grow up and move on

We take our “Were the best” attitude

Trying to find somewhere to put it

So the world makes sense

Some of us direct it toward sports teams

Some of us direct it toward politics

Some of us direct it toward Religion

“My team’s better than your team” and all that

Some of us try to hold on to it anyway that we can

Even when we get past it

There is still a part of us that is reluctant to let go of it

I never held much stock in it

I did fall for the

“Our country is better than your country” idea

But

I think that today

I have moved beyond that.

I’m a human

I love my country

But with the internet

We are bridging gaps

that we just couldn’t bridge before

The world seems smaller now

I’m not going to play the game any more

I’m a human being

We should all be on the same team

There is no need for competition

Among countries and beliefs

Those forms of hatred

Are taught

And completely unnecessary

I don’t want to fight anymore

It takes too much energy

From now on

No matter who dislikes me for it

I believe in “One World”

I still love America

But I no longer see America as a separate Country

I see it as part of the world

A world where only the

Ones that don’t know any better

Still fight
