Samhain

As Samhain approaches

The veil between the worlds thins

Our family will have a Bonfire

As is the custom

I only have two relatives that have passed

But I plan to whisper a thank you to them

They gave me a chance at a life

that would not have been possible

without their intervention

In addition to that

Samhain is the

Celebration of the third harvest

We will be harvesting our goats,

chickens and ducks

At the Bonfire (Bone Fire)

We will roast one of the smaller goats,

A couple ducks and a couple chickens

When we are done eating our feast

We will throw the bones in the fire

As is tradition

We will light candles in our carved pumpkins

(In the past these pumpkins were

Thought to protect people

From evil mischievous spirits)

I’m sure that the children

Will dress up in their costumes

(In the past

These costumes were worn

to trick the mischevious spirits)

They will walk around door to door

Collecting treats

(In the past

This was a night

where the poor went door to door

asking for cakes, butter, or other foods

the tradition varies

from country to country)

In previous years

we have invited other people

to our celebration

Nobody has ever shown up

So we aren’t inviting anybody

This year

The night has evolved

in to a spiritual night for us

and I don’t want any bad feelings

when people don’t show up

No matter what your beliefs

Samhain has a different meaning

To most everybody

I hope yours is pleasant

if you don’t celebrate the harvest

if any of this is offensive to you

Please disregard it.

We have no interest in offending anyone.

We are only interested

In experiencing

some of the old ways
