The Drinking Age

The Drinking Age

Our drinking age in America is 21 years old

An 18 year old

isn’t old enough to consume alcohol

and

they aren’t old enough

to put a quarter in a slot machine in Las Vegas

In America

At the age of 18

Our young ladies can strip for dirty old men

Our young people can get blown apart

in the service of our country

and

they can vote in our elections

I’m not saying to lower the drinking age

Or to

Raise the age that young people can

Join the military

But

I think that we should be consistent

If 18 is too young to drink or gamble

then it is too young

to make a decision

 as important as deciding

to join the military,

take your clothes off in a club,

or to chose our president.

If 18 is old enough

to die for your country

then it is old enough

to do the rest of those things.

I don’t care

which direction

that we go with it

but what messages

are we sending our youth

your old enough

for us to exploit

your bodies

and your enthusiasm

for your country

but your still a child

and you’re not old enough

to make certain decisions.

Personally

I think the age should be 21 for making adult decisions

I think that graduating high school should be mandatory and there should be some sort of system in place that says if you don’t get your associates degree then you will not be eligible for welfare, food stamps or for Medicaid.

If you get a college education you have a better chance at being able to get and hold a job.

If you choose to drop out then you choose to fend for yourself if things don’t go as you planned.

Welfare, food stamps and Medicaid are good things to have as emergency nets to catch good hard working people if they lose their job but they were never meant to support people that chose to drop out before they acquired the skills that they need to succeed in life.

Many people don’t come from a home life that teaches responsibility, either in actions or in financial situations.

For those that come from a family that provide those good things the college would just be a bonus boost.

For those that had parents that were financially irresponsible

College would help to provide them with the basic skills to succeed.

None of this really matters anyway

Because it is only my opinion

And I’m just one man

In a world full of people

With different opinions
